Chapter One: Discovering the Art of Forest Bathing

What is Forest Bathing and Why You Should Try It

When you first hear the phrase forest bathing, it's easy to imagine someone swimming in a woodland lake or taking a bath surrounded by trees. Thankfully, it's much simpler—and much more accessible—than that.

Forest bathing is the practice of slowing down and spending time in nature with intention. It's about stepping away from the noise of everyday life and allowing yourself to truly experience the sights, sounds, smells and textures of the natural world.

The idea began in Japan during the 1980s, where it became known as Shinrin-yoku, meaning "taking in the forest atmosphere." It wasn't designed as another form of exercise or a challenging outdoor activity. Instead, it was introduced as a gentle way to improve wellbeing by reconnecting people with nature.

In today's world, that feels more important than ever.

Most of us spend our days rushing from one task to another. Even when we're walking outside, we're often checking our phones, thinking about work or planning what comes next. Our minds are always somewhere else.

Forest bathing invites us to do the opposite.

Instead of focusing on where you're going, you focus on where you are.

You might notice the sunlight dancing through the leaves, listen to birds calling in the distance or pause to feel the rough texture of an old oak tree. You don't have to achieve anything or reach a destination. You simply allow yourself to be present.

One of the things I love most about forest bathing is that there are no rules. You don't need expensive walking boots or specialist equipment. You don't have to be particularly fit or adventurous. All you need is a patch of nature and the willingness to slow down.

Whether you spend twenty minutes in your local woods or an afternoon wandering through a country park, the experience is yours to enjoy.

Sometimes the greatest gift nature gives us isn't excitement—it's peace.

In the next chapter, we'll look at why something as simple as spending time among trees can have such a remarkable effect on our minds and bodies.

Yours truly,

Lerika
